Traditional Chemistry Major
Graduation with Honors

College Honors:
Students who earn a 3.5 overall upper-division grade point average (GPA) plus a 3.3 (GPA) in chemistry will be designated as CLAS honors graduates.

High or Highest Honors:
Chemistry majors who have earned an overall upper-division GPA of 3.5 or higher, plus 3.3 or higher average for all chemistry course work attempted (exclusive of CHM 4910 and CHM 4905) and who complete a minimum of six (6) semester hours of senior research, CHM 4910, will be eligible for High or Highest Honors. In addition, a thesis based upon the research project must be presented to the undergraduate coordinator together with a favorable letter of recommendation from the faculty supervisor. The thesis must contain both discussion and experimental results.   Example theses may be found at our  WebCT Vista site:  http://lss.at.ufl.edu.   Announcements and deadline reminders will also be posted there.

The research will normally be carried out under the direction of a member of the chemistry faculty. However, a problem that is chemical in nature may be conducted outside the chemistry department. Students should see Dr. Vaneica Young, Flint 250 (vanyoung@ufl.edu) to obtain approval for this option.

To be considered for High or Highest Honors the student must submit his/her thesis and recommendation letter to Dr. Young at least two (2) weeks prior to the end of the semester. A Special Abstract must be submitted with the thesis.

Students whose GPA, written thesis and overall program are of exeptional merit will be awarded Highest Honors.
