:: Biochemistry Division

Introduction

The Biochemistry Division was created in the Department of Chemistry in 1994 with three faculty: Profs. Nicole Horenstein, Nigel Richards and Jon Stewart. Dr. Gail Fanucci joined the division in 2005 and Drs. Steven Bruner and Rebecca Butcher will be part of the group in January 2010. All six faculty share the belief that a strong chemical background provides a solid foundation for a career in biological chemistry research in the next millennium. These beliefs guide the design of the courses offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and in the procedures by which graduate students earn their Ph.D. in the Division, all of which are described in more detail elsewhere in this site.

While this web site describes many aspects of the Biochemistry Division, the best way to get to know the Division is to visit in person. Procedures for applying for graduate studies can be found on-line as well as instructions on traveling to Gainesville for a visit. Gainesville is a city of approximately 100,000 people located in north central Florida approximately 60 miles southwest of Jacksonville and 100 miles north of Orlando. An airport with regional jet service by Delta is located approximately 15 minutes from campus. The University is within an hour's drive from both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, which provide numerous opportunities for recreation. The climate features a mild winter, a pleasant spring and fall along with a hot, humid summer (four months). Apartments are plentiful and relatively inexpensive in Gainesville as compared to other cities. It is generally possible to find an apartment within walking distance to campus and many roads feature bike paths to facilitate commuting. An excellent bus service is also available.

Those with questions or desiring more information should contact the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Ben Smith, or the Division Chair, Professor Jon Stewart, or any of the other Division members.
